How I Trick Myself To Be More Productive

Because I own my own business, I can work when I want and how I want. This is a major perk. However, being my own man, so to speak, means I also have to make sure that I finish every task in a timely manner. This can be hard when you have no one in your ear telling you to get the job done. I have to find ways to be more productive to ensure that projects are completed and I am paid. Below are a few tricks I use to be productive during the work day.

Set Goals
Each day, I try to set goals based on the task at hand. I take a look at my daily schedule and then plan accordingly. I try to have one project done during one time frame and then move on to the next. For example, I might start the day answering emails. I set a goal to answer at least 20 emails within a 30 minute time frame. I try to make it a game and reach the goal before the time is up. Once the 30 minute time frame is reached, I stop and move on to something else.

Stay Offline
Checking email requires me to be online which then gets me thinking about Facebook and Instagram. It is important to avoid these sites at all costs, unless you use them for marketing. It can be easy to become distracted by a friend’s post or by cute videos online. Stay offline unless you are checking email or don’t even have these applications on your work mobile. This helps you to avoid being distracted and sucked in to the social media universe.

Take a Break
Be sure to take breaks throughout the day. Because I work for myself, I can take a break whenever I want. I try to work for an hour or two and then take a small break. I get up and move around, grab a drink, etc. Because I take breaks, I am able to free my mind to be ready for the next task. I try to take a break once a project is finished so I am not leaving any item without completing it first. This helps me to move on to something else instead of coming back to the same thing yet again.

Reward Yourself
If you have trouble staying on task, consider rewarding yourself. If you enjoy coffee, have a nice specialty cup once the day is done. Tell yourself you have to stay on task so the job is done and you can be rewarded. Go shopping or take time to download a new book. You know what works best for you so reward yourself accordingly.

Staying productive, especially as a self-employed businessman, takes effort. I have to stay focused each day to complete the job at hand. Think of little tricks you can do, including what is listed above, to stay productive during the wok day and get the job done.
